WHAT’S AN AUPAIR?

Aupair literally means “on par” (equal) in French. This is when a foreign young international visitors who come to live in the United States on a J-1 Visitor Exchange Visa to live with an American host family as part of an international cultural exchange program in order to acquire a better understanding and appreciation of American life, language and culture. This is mutually achieved through living with an American family and providing live-in child care in exchange for free room and board, a weekly stipend and contributions towards education. Au pairs are different from being a nanny because they are considered “on par” with the family meaning they are more than employees but an extended member of their host family, sharing a cultural exchange experience that often leads to a lasting relationship with the host family even after they leave the program.
